SAMUEL GENEVIEVE WINS THE ROTARY CUREPIPE JUNIOR CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP 2017

The curtain has fallen this week-end on the Rotary Curepipe Junior Chess Championship 2017 and after 6 rounds of hard fought chess Samuel Genevieve (St Joseph) beats out the challenge of Gyanesh Digumber (RCC) to win the title with an undefeated performance of five wins and a draw in six games.

THE DRAWING OF LOTS FOR THE MASTERS 2017 TOURNAMENT EFFECTED AT COROMANDEL

The drawing of lots for the Masters 2017 has been done today at the Coromandel Community Centre. Five of the ten participants namely Roy Phillips,Deevarajan Chinasamy,Patrick Marie,Salhi Zouhaier and Sanju Backory were present and the ceremony was presided by Chief Arbiter Ronald Raimbert assisted by the President of the MCF Hurrynarain Bhowany and deputy Arbiter Patrick Li Ying.

MASTERS 2017-RD 1 EXPRESS REPORT

The Masters 2017 has started today 18th March at the Eddy Norton Hall, Rose-Hill, and we already had 5 decisive results with some big upsets. On board 1 five-times Masters Champion Roy Phillips dispatched newbie Christophe Chan with a mating attack in 23 moves. On board 2 Nadarajen Vencatasawmy proved that his victory agaisnt D.Chinasamy was no fluke as he defeated the dangerous tactician Salhi Zouhaier in a tactical skirmish in the french defense.

MASTERS 2017-NADARAJEN VENCATASAWMY SURPRISE LEADER AFTER 3 ROUNDS

The first week-end of the Masters 2017 saw three rounds being played and the surprise leader of the tournament is newcomer Nadarajaen Vencatasawmy on 3 points after he dispatched Salhi Zouhaier,Nuvin Dussoye and Sanju Backory respectively. He was in trouble only against Dussoye as the latter took advantage of his opponent inexperience in the King's Indian Defense set-up  to launch a king-side attack which netted him the exchange. However in a  won position Dussoye over-stepped the time limit ,he must have big regrets in coming to the venue 25 minutes late for the round.

MASTERS 2017- ROY PHILLIPS ON COURSE FOR A 6TH MASTERS TITLE

The second week-end of the Masters 2017 tournament was fiercely contested as there was not a single draw in the 3 rounds of play ,with players playing the White pieces scoring  8 wins whereas their black counter-parts managed 7 wins.As expected the leader of the first week-end Nadarajen Vencatasawmy who made 100 pct score in the first 3 rounds made another 100 pct score but this time he was beaten in all three games agsinst Goorsahye,Chinasamy and Naipal respectively.

ROY PHILLIPS WINS THE MASTERS 2017

The curtain has fallen on the 2017 edition of the "MASTERS" chess tournament and as expected Roy Phillips has bagged a sixth national champion title after posting an undefeated card of 7 wins and 2 draws in nine games. Roy finished 2 points clear of runner-up Deevarajan Chinasamy and third-placed Christophe Chan , with Patrick Marie grabbing fourth place and the last qualifying spot for next year's Masters.

REPUBLIC CUP 2017-BIG PICTORIAL REPORT OF RDS 1 & 2

The Republic Cup 2017 tournament sponsored by the Municipality of Beau Bassin/Rose-Hill attracted a mixed field of 24 players ,with ten national rated players led by Masters Champion Fide Master Roy Phillips. There were eight juniors in the field and 7 female players among whom Aamirah Bheeky,Meritza Acham and Charlotte Labour.After 2 rounds most of the favourites namely Roy Phillips, Antoine Goorsahye,Ashvin Jotee and Hoolan Naipal are on 2 wins but they are joined by two newcomers namely Sunjay Gookooluk and Ashish Sukdeo.

REPUBLIC CUP 2017- ROY PHILLIPS IN POLE POSITION AFTER 5 ROUNDS

After 5 rounds of hard fought chess battles in the Republic Cup 2017 the Masters Champion Roy Phillips is in the lead with a perfect score of 5 points out of 5 rounds. He beat Christophe Chan in the fifth round and is not really being challenged in this tournament despite another big scare in round four against Hoolan Naipal. Roy will face Antoine Goorsahye in the last round and will be careful against this opponent who drew in a winning position against him at the recent Masters tournament.

LAUNCH OF "CHESS IN SCHOOLS" 1ST JUNE 2017-MOKA GOVT SCHOOL

Tomorrow 1st June 2017 will be a historic day for the Mauritius Chess Federation as the long cherished dream project " Chess In Schools" will be launched at 1.30 p.m. at the Moka Government School. This pilot project will involve the following eleven schools : Moka Govt School, New Bambous Geoffroy Govt School, Flic en Flac Govt School, Cascavelle Govt School, Maha Rishi Dayanand Saraswati Govt School,St Hubert Govt School, St Francois D'Assise RCA, Charles Telfair Govt School, Notre Dame de Mont Carmel RCA, Robinson Govt School, Louis S Coutet Govt School.
