REPUBLIC CUP 2017-BIG PICTORIAL REPORT OF RDS 1 & 2

The Republic Cup 2017 tournament sponsored by the Municipality of Beau Bassin/Rose-Hill attracted a mixed field of 24 players ,with ten national rated players led by Masters Champion Fide Master Roy Phillips. There were eight juniors in the field and 7 female players among whom Aamirah Bheeky,Meritza Acham and Charlotte Labour. After 2 rounds most of the favourites namely Roy Phillips, Antoine Goorsahye,Ashvin Jotee and Hoolan Naipal are on 2 wins but they are joined by two newcomers namely Sunjay Gookooluk and Ashish Sukdeo. We have been pleasantly surprised by Sunjay Gookooluk play as he defeated  two good players in Rene Genne and Christophe Chan the third-placed player in the 2017 Masters in a game where he sacrificed a piece for a raging attack on his opponent king. Sunjay used to  ply his trade in Rome (Italy) and has just returned to Mauritius ,he was a 1700 rated player. The other surprise of the week-end was the slow start of Zouhaier Salhi who is on 0.5 pt after the 2 rounds.

Our top female players Aamirah Bheeky and Meritza Acham are on 1 point each as the former lost against Hoolan Naipal and the latter against Roy Phillips but they are on course to fight for the Women's title. There are three good juniors in Ivan  Mukin (Russia), Vaagish Andhin  and Jayson Laor who will compete for the Under 18 category.

There  will be only 1 round next week-end on Saturday 20th May at 15.00 hours
