The Republic Cup 2017 chess tournament has ended last saturday with Roy Phillips claiming a second title this year as he drew with Antoine Goorsahye to finish on 5.5 points,  a clear point ahead of Ashvin Jotee. This looks to be Roy Phillips farewell tournament in Mauritius as he is returning back to the U.K. in July.

Hoolan Naipal took third place on 4.5 points  just edging Antoine Goorsahye on tie-break for a place on the podium. Sunjay Gookoolk made a promising start for a newcomer as he collected 4 points,having beaten 3 rated players in Chan,Genne and Acham. Adrien Fine and Christophe Chan had a decent tournament as they both finished on 4 points.

Rama Baloonuck scored a creditable 3.5 points and he will surely enter the national rating list after having played 6 rated opponents. Shakeel Ramessur and Ashish Sukdeo made a good start for their first participation on the local chess scene ,on 3 points.

The female category prize went to Meritza Acham on 3 points after she beat Aamirah Beekhy in their crunch match in the last round. Aamirah had a superb attacking position with 2 bishops,Queen and rook targeting Meritza king side but she fell to a back rank mate tactic. The Under 18 prize went to Jayson Laor who just pipped Charlotte Labour to this category prize.

The Under 12 prize  went to newbie Feng Yihang from China who scored 1.5 points, The other juniors who did well were russian Ivan Mukin on 3 points and Vaagish Andhin on 2 points.

Prize Giving will be done on saturday with a blitz tournament scheduled at 15.00 hours
